ABOUT THE AUTHOR
MATTHEW LEWIS, PhD, grew up in Geneva, Alabama where he fell in love with experiencing the outdoors through hunting and fishing. He is an avid fly fisher and outdoorsman. Matthew is a college professor and fisheries scientist, specializing in genetics and conservation. After spending almost a decade working in human genetics, Matthew developed an affinity for redeye bass, or “Alabama brook trout” as they are called due to the fact they are found in small streams and rarely grow larger than twelve inches. Some of the questions that existed about this group of species' conservation status required a genetics approach. This prompted a career change from human medicine to fisheries science and Matt has not looked back. In addition to writing Alabama's Best Fly Fishing, he is the author of the book, Fly Fishing for Redeye Bass: An Adventure Across Southern Waters and numerous articles for The Fly Fish Journal, Backcountry Journal, American Fly Fishing, and others. Matt is also the National Vice Chair - South and was the founding Chair for the Alabama chapter of Native Fish Coalition.
