This small collection of traditional Catskill dry flies is representative of the old classics, using a good mix of materials and techniques, yet continues to fish well on freestone trout rivers everywhere. Also included here is a pattern for the big burrowing Mayflies of the far North country lakes, one that will entice the largest Brook Trout swimming today, when cast to the right spot at the right time! This fly once caught a trout that was so big that two cameras were required to get a photo of it!
The Minonipi Wulff is one of Dave’s favorite flies and has taken some of the largest brook trout in Labrador. All this and more have lead Dave to appreciate that fly fishing is not simply a hobby, but rather a way of life.
QUILL GORDON
Hook: Mustad 94840, Daiichi 1180, or equivalent, sizes 12 or 14
Thread: Uni 8/0 black, Uni 8/0 white
Wing: Woodduck flank, or mandarin, upright and divided
Tail: 10-12 straight, web-free fibers of medium dun hackle
Body: Stripped peacock herl fiber
Hackle: Two slightly differing shades of medium/dark dun hackle feathers
RED QUILL
Hook: Mustad 94840, Daiichi 1180, or equivalent, sizes 12 or 14
Thread: Uni 8/0 wine
Wing: Woodduck flank or mandarin, upright and divided

LIGHT HENDRICKSON

AMERICAN MARCH BROWN
Hook: Mustad 94840, or equivalent, size 10, or may use 1X long hook, such as 94831
Thread: Uni 8/0 or Danville 6/0, tan
Wing: Dark heavily barred woodduck, either a single feather with center removed, or two centers, or bunches of fibers removed from stem, tied in, then treated the same as with other woodduck wings
Tail: 12-15 straight, web-free fibers of dark ginger hackle
Body: Dubbed ruddy orangy tan red fox fur or mix of tan red fox and dyed rusty Australian opossum fur
Hackle: One medium/dark ginger and one medium grizzly, both from good cape
PALE EVENING DUN
Hook: Mustad 94842, Daiichi 1330, or equivalent, in sizes 16 or 18
Thread: Uni 8/0 light cahill, or other 8/0 or 10/0 pale yellow
Wing: Light mallard secondary quill sections
Tail: Tail: 8-10 straight, web-free fibers of very light dun hackle
Body: Dubbed pale yellow or light orange dyed fur or light orange fine synthetic blend
Hackle: One extra light dun or one pale cream hackle feather
MINONIPI WULFF
Hook: Daiichi 2421, or Partridge 01 Wilson, in sizes 8-12
Thread: Danville 6/0 brown/olive pre-waxed
Wing: Natural or dyed light brown calftail
Tail: Straight woodchuck tail hair
Body: Dubbed beaver, dyed brown/olive
Hackle: One medium dun and one grizzly hackle feather, may vary shade of dun hackle
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Dave Brandt (pen name Brooks Gordon) is the founding member of Catskill Fly Tyers guild and has been involved with Trout Unlimited, The Federation of Fly Fishers, United Fly Tyers, The Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum and several Fly Fishing Shows. He has tied flies commercially for years, finally moving toward more custom tying and teaching as an instructor with the Wulff Fishing School for the last 20 years. I would hope to have conveyed some of the little detail that would make one Catskill dry a little better than another, even though we all know that each will (can) catch fish.
Some of us come to feel that most of what we fly tyers do is not for the fish, anyway, but to impress each other!
