These techniques are based on a solid understanding of the history of the techniques and use of materials handed down over the years. These patterns and techniques were developed by Bill Heckel in the early 1970’s and the intent is to share the techniques required to execute them. Hook: Mustad 9671 or equivalent of an appropriate size, weighted or un-weighted
Thread: Dark Brown
Tailing: Three flues from ringneck pheasant center tail feather
Abdomen: Stalcup’s Premo goose biots, brown
Wing case: Stalcup’s Premo goose biots, brown or black
Thorax: Dubbing blend of squirrel back, guard hairs and under-fur
Legs: Flues from ringneck pheasant center tail feather

TRANSITIONAL DUN/BIOT EMERGER
Hook: Gaelic Supreme of the appropriate size
Thread: The appropriate color
Tailing: Wood duck
Abdomen: Stalcup’s Premo goose biots, of the appropriate color
Winging: Whiting Chickabou, light dun
Legs: Wood duck

BIOT DUN
Hook: Gaelic Supreme of the appropriate size

Dubbing: Appropriate color to separate tailing

Hackle: Whiting saddle hackle should be gauged one size, smaller than the hook size on which the fly is being tied

Bill Heckel has been tying flies for over 50 years and teaching for over 35. He started tying for the Federation of Fly Fishers regional and International Conclaves in the early 1970’s and has tied for the British Fly Fair International. The Buz Buszak Memorial Fly Tying Award was given to Bill Heckel, which is the highest award available to any tyer.
