Doc Thompson

Fly Fisher/Guide/Fly Tier

Doc Thompson started High Country Anglers in 1995 thinking he could make a living being a fly fishing guide, and he is still alive. His first exposure to New Mexico was as a young child on family trips to Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Doc's early trips to New Mexico influenced him in working and fishing at the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in the 1980's and early 1990's. Doc moved to New Mexico shortly after graduating from the University of Missouri.

Wild Rivers of Northern New Mexico

Doc Thompson, a professional guide for 15 years, has been taking fly fishers to where the fish are in the wild rivers of northern New Mexico including the Rio Grande, Cimmaron and the Rio Castilla. Listen in to learn about these unique fisheries and how to fish them.

Doc is known for his patience and calm demeanor when guiding and likes to mix education into guide trips. He is eager to boost the learning curve of beginners or provide timely advice with new tricks for "old dogs." As Doc says, "All guides love to fish, but I also love to guide." Thompson also organizes small fly fishing trips to South America and Central America each winter.

In addition to guiding full time, Doc is an Orvis Contract Fly Tier and Designer with many favorite patterns featured in the Orvis Catalog, Orvis News and Southwest Fly Fishing Magazine. He presents a number of educational programs at fly shops and fly fishing clubs throughout the country each year. Doc contributes articles and photos to popular fly fishing magazines and has contributed to such books as Fly Fishing Northern New Mexico (edited by Craig Martin/Univ. of New Mexico Press) and Freshwater Fly Fishing Tips from the Pros (edited by Mark D. Williams/Fireside).

Doc is a charter member of Trout Unlimited's Guide/Outfitter Business program and a charter member of Enchanted Circle Trout Unlimited. Doc was honored as the 2006 Orvis Endorsed Guide of the Year and the 2005 Orvis Fly Tier of the Year.
