Coleman Savage

Fly Fisher, Fly Tier, Guide

Coleman Savage can say with conviction that he is obsessed with fishing, spending over 200 days on the water most years. Through pioneering new fishing techniques, exploring far-off fisheries, and questing for trophy trout, Coleman has become a denizen and student of the rivers in Montana.

Coleman grew up in Scottsville, Virginia and Cherokee Sound in the Bahamas. Between these two beautiful unspoiled places, Coleman was exposed to remarkable fishing under the tutelage of incredible mentors. It was in his early years that he developed a deep passion for fishing, being on the water, and finding serenity in nature.

From Angler to Outfitter: Building a Life as a Fly Fishing Guide

What does it really take to turn a passion for fly fishing into a profession? Montana guide and outfitter Coleman Savage shares his journey from fly-shop jobs to guiding—and how Guiding for the Future helped accelerate his growth. Discover why becoming a great guide requires far more than catching fish, and how knowledge of river ecology, conservation, water rights, stewardship, client relationships, and professionalism can transform a guide’s career and their connection to the waters they depend on. Join us to learn about his journey.

He got his start in the fishing business as a young man teaching casting and fly tying classes at a local fly shop before he could drive. As soon as Coleman finished high school, he packed up and moved to Montana. After a few summers on the river and winters in the mountains, Coleman enrolled at Montana State University in Bozeman where he would study Business and Water Resource Science. Currently, he is enjoying his dream job as a Montana Fishing Outfitter

Coleman calls the Gallatin Valley home, but travels all around Southwest Montana following the best fishing. If he’s not on the water, Coleman is spending time with friends and family, tying outside-the-box fly patterns, or heading to the hills looking for serenity and deep powder turns.
