Description
For nearly 40 years Juan Calvillo was an upstanding citizen, working first for ad agencies and then starting his own photography studio. When he arrived in Portland, Oregon in the early 90’s, he volunteered to be Programs Director for ASMP Oregon. That’s when it all went wrong.
Steve Cridland, then president of the local chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers, decided Juan should attend the Chapter Presidents’ Meeting in Aspen. Steve also suggested, nearly insisted, they head out early and spend a day with fishing guide Gifford Maythem. After saying he’d go along to take photos, Juan gave in to the combined cajoling of Steve and Gifford. He bought a license and rented boots and waders. Five trout later, including a 16” brown, it was all over. Twenty years later Juan still shoots commercial work, but the fly-fishing force is strong and has compelled him to establish Dancing Redband Publications.
Juan feels books about a sport that takes place in some of the most beautiful locations in America should be illustrated throughout with color photographs. He also feels the books should help fishers get out to discover and learn to fish new waters.
Redband Trout Waters is the first in a series of “road trip” books. In coming volumes, Juan will personally fish and photograph all the rivers in the books, then provide readers with what he’s learned of the rivers, campgrounds, hub cities and their locale. He will share his experiences so readers can hit the best places when they take a similar road trip while avoiding the “bumps in the road”. Juan is fired up at the idea!
