Description

Including the History of the Beetle Bug & Lur-All Bait Companies. This book is a comprehensive & well written history of the Millsite Steel & Wire Works & the Millsite Tackle Company, both fishing tackle makers in the city of Howell, Michigan. In Part One of this definitive history, the author takes you from the times of the early settlement of Livingston County, Michigan in 1833 to the closing of the factory in 1976. Each chapter is a chronological walk through time & includes many informative advertisements, catalog pages, patent drawings, & photographs. The book also includes histories of the Beetle Bug Bait Company (1934-1936) & the Lur-All Tackle & Mfg. Co. (1946-1953), both from Michigan.

Mr. Lumpkin’s thorough research of these companies has provided the reader with an excellent background of not only their products but who was involved with development, many details of the aspects of production & the intricacies of running a tackle business. Stories in the book tell us about Millsites impact on other fishing tackle manufacturers (including the whole story of the James Heddon’s Sons law suit), the early use & failure of plastics in fishing tackle, & how the natural environment played such an important role on the eventual demise of the company.

Part Two is primarily a collector’s guide & includes stunning photographs of all of the products manufactured & sold by the four tackle makers. Chapter XIV in this section is a comprehensive value guide for the collector that determines a specific “level of scarcity” for each item. Chapter XV is an excellent presentation of various collections. The vast majority of the items pictured in this book are from Mr. Lumpkin’s private collection & show the commitment he has made to preserving a part of fishing tackle history. Finally, to make the book complete, the reader will find excellent charts for referencing the production dates of each of the 60+ artificial lures, & other fishing paraphernalia they manufactured & sold.
