Description

Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, are historic artists colonies located between some famous fly fishing
waters; the San Juan, Pecos, and Rio Grande rivers flow through zones that stretch from alpine to desert. The Valle Vidal, Rio Grande Valley, Valles Caldera and Pecos wilderness all have prime trout streams running through them. With all that variety, there is always someplace to fish year-round.

After 50 years of guiding these waters Taylor Streit knows where and when to fish, and with what fly. Thoughtful maps inform you of the land status and access points. With over a hundred descriptive photos by Taylor and his son Nick, you will literally “picture” what to expect when you get there.

Passionate about fishing in New Mexico, and often a little irreverent, Streit “tells it like it is,” describing environmental threats to our waters and political situations affecting fishermen’s access, native trout recovery, and even otter doings.

The Fish Now! section is designed to get you out on the water with a trout soon wriggling at the end of your line. His knowledge and remembrances from half a century of fishing and guiding northern New Mexico can be read later when the fish stop biting!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Taylor Streit was wading the fabled waters of the Catskills before he was 10; then tying flies commercially and guiding in his teens. He moved to Northern New Mexico in the late 60s where he opened Taos Fly Shop. He’s guided fly fisherman for 30 years--primarily in New Mexico but in the Bahamas and Argentina as well. Guiding is what has paid the bills “there’s been no trust fund or endorsements; if the clients don’t catch we don’t eat.” In 2001 he was unanimously inducted into the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a legendary guide. He’s authored four books: Fly Fishing New Mexico, Man vs fish and Instinctive Fly Fishing I and II.
He also writes for various magazines and newspapers, and his photos have appeared in Fly Rod and Reel and Grays magazines. He lives in Taos, New Mexico near his favorite river-- the wild Rio Grande and works with his son Nick out of taosflyshop.com
