Description

A brief look at modern troutfishing literature shows that we, as fly fishers, have adapted well to catching trout in still waters ranging from beaver ponds to large impoundments, including the Great Lakes. We know how to catch them in moving waters as well. In fact, we know how to catch trout under most circumstances, from the tiny mountain rivulets to the famed rivers of the East and West. We use nymphs, dry flies, pupal imitations, stillborns, emergers, and floating nymphs: We carry an incredible number of patterns to cover just about any situation that might arise. I hope to teach you an approach that will allow you to go to most streams, most of the time, carrying a limited number of patterns and catch plenty of trout. This is not necessarily a new approach, but it is somewhat specialized.

As trout anglers, we have taken the "specialist" game to new plateaus, and it is on that plateau that I hope to stay with this book. While the methods and patterns presented herein are simple and can be used successfully on just about any stream where you might find trout, they are specialized-specialized in the sense that they involve specific water types. Of all the varieties of trout fishing available, this book focuses only on the fast-water stretches of rivers and streams and the use of nymphs in fishing these areas.
